Short answer

For most people, yes: What Hi-Fi gave the Sony WH-1000XM6 5/5 for sound, features and comfort, and says their noise canceling sounds more natural than the Bose QuietComfort Ultra Headphones, even if the Bose might feel marginally stronger. If you want to save, the Sony WH-1000XM5 are the cheaper pick, and iPhone owners should know they won't get hi-res audio on the XM6.

“It cuts out low rumbles and background chatter so effectively that I often forget where I am”

What could be better

The case still stores the headphones flat, and What Hi-Fi says it is still on the large side.
You can't listen over a wired USB-C connection.
Expert Reviews lists no hi-res audio support for iPhone owners.
Honest flaw

Ear cushions run warm

Buyers often say the faux-leather ear cushions make their ears warm, needing a break after about 2 h. A Fossbytes reviewer said the same after 2 months of use.

Who won't mind

People who listen in sessions shorter than about 2 h, outside summer heat, are the least likely to notice.

Who should buy

  • Train and subway commuters who want the rumble gone
  • People who take lots of calls on the go
  • Laptop-and-phone users who need two-device multipoint

Who should skip

  • iPhone owners who want hi-res audio
  • Anyone who needs wired listening over USB-C
  • Bose fans who want manual noise canceling levels

Is it worth the price?

The XM6 list at $449, $50 more than the XM5's $399 when What Hi-Fi tested them, while the Bose QuietComfort Ultra Headphones list at $429. The AirPods Max cost $549 when What Hi-Fi first reviewed them, and What Hi-Fi says they can't compete with the Sony on calls. If you don't need the best calls and sound, Expert Reviews calls the discounted XM5 a steal.

Questions buyers ask

Did you test these yourselves?
No. Gear Receipts never tests products itself. This page is built from the published tests by What Hi-Fi and Expert Reviews and from buyer reviews on The Good Guys, ProductReview.com.au, Fossbytes and SoundGuys, each linked in our sources.
Is the Sony WH-1000XM6 better than the Bose QuietComfort Ultra for noise canceling?
What Hi-Fi says the Bose might feel marginally more effective, but the Sony's noise canceling is more natural, which makes the XM6 the better option for a lot of people. On sound, What Hi-Fi says it isn't a fair fight: the Bose sound smeared next to the Sony. The Bose does let you set noise canceling levels by hand, which the XM6 can't.
Do the Sony WH-1000XM6 support hi-res audio on iPhone?
No. Expert Reviews explains that LDAC works only on Android, and the AAC codec iPhones use doesn't support hi-res. What Hi-Fi also notes there is no aptX HD, and Expert Reviews points iPhone owners who care about hi-res to the Bowers & Wilkins Px7 S3, which can receive it over USB-C.
Should I upgrade from the Sony WH-1000XM5?
The XM6 list at $449 versus the XM5's $399 in What Hi-Fi's review. You get 12 microphones instead of 8, the QN3 chip Sony says is seven times faster, and metal-reinforced hinges, per What Hi-Fi and Expert Reviews. Battery life stays at 30 hours with noise canceling on, and Expert Reviews calls the discounted XM5 a steal.
How good is the call quality on the Sony WH-1000XM6?
What Hi-Fi calls it class-leading and says even the more expensive AirPods Max can't compete. Expert Reviews is less sold: voice pickup was fine up to around 77 dBA of background noise but suffered bad distortion above that, and was really quite bad at around 87 dBA.
Are the Sony WH-1000XM6 durable?
Expert Reviews says Sony fixed the XM5's fragile plastic hinges by beefing up the area with metal. SoundGuys, however, reports owners whose plastic headband ring cracked after 1 to 5 months, with at least 13 cases, most often on larger heads with the headband fully extended. Owners also report Sony refusing warranty coverage.
